Preparing for VBS

Regional training is such a wonderful way to learn ways to prepare for vacation Bible school, exchange ideas and get excited about the theme! This year we went through the six steps to prepare for VBS and each one is so valuable to ensuring that your time and the children's experience is the best that we can give God.

Six Steps to Preparing for VBS:

  1. Prepare your heart! Don't forget to prepare your heart so that you can teach from the overflow. Remember to read the teacher devotionals each day and spend time in prayer for your class and individual students. Be expectant of what God is going to do during and after vacation Bible school.
  2. Get the Basic Facts. Look at the schedule, teaching time frames, supply lists and important dates.
  3. Plan. Understand the Bible content. Spend some time carefully reading each day's Bible story to familiarize yourself with it. Learn the Bible verse for the week and the key points for each day. Listen to the CD with the songs and practice the hand motions. None of this takes up too much time, but is vital to ensuring you are ready to teach.
  4. Gather & Prepare. Decide what activities you will do. Make your supply lists and purchase anything that you will be reimbursed for. Assemble a paper grocery bag for each day that has all the materials you will need to make it easier to have things on hand when you need them.
  5. Teach. Use everything that you have been working so hard on and teach the children about Jesus! Remember that children learn in four ways: spiritually, socially & emotionally, mentally, and physically. Try to appeal to several of these ways each day.
  6. Continue the Connection. Follow up with your kids! A simple phone call or postcard can mean the world to a child and make them feel so special. Volunteer for a Wednesday night childcare slot to continue the VBS experience. Consider sending home a piece of your decorations (a piece of a banner, a poster, etc) with each child to hang in their room to remind them of VBS.
And the most important things to remember:

  • BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
  • BE FLEXIBLE
  • ADJUST YOUR PLANS TO FIT THE NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN
  • HELP THEM REMEMBER FACTS ABOUT JESUS!
